Frequently Asked Questions2018-10-26T18:00:37+00:00
What is LASIK?2018-06-11T03:07:01+00:00

LASIK is a modification of Laser Vision Correction.  In LASIK, a thin flap of cornea is lifted in a single sheet to permit laser treatment of the eye’s exposed inner surface.  Following the procedure, the corneal flap is repositioned.  The corneal tissue has extraordinary natural bonding qualities that allow effective healing without the use of stitches.

What is astigmatism?2018-06-11T03:08:24+00:00

Astigmatism occurs when the eyeball is oblong (football shaped).  Light will focus in two or more focal points.  Astigmatism is often present along with nearsightedness.

What is farsightedness?2018-06-11T03:08:43+00:00

If your vision is farsighted, you will typically have difficulty focusing on both distant and near objects.  This condition occurs when the eyeball is too short or the corneal curvature is too flat, causing light to focus behind the retina.  This causes blurry vision.

What is nearsightedness?2018-06-11T03:08:56+00:00

If you’re nearsighted, you cannot see things clearly in the distance. This condition occurs when the cornea, which is located on the front part of the eye, is too long or steeply curved. Because of this curvature, light entering the eye focuses in front of the retina instead of on it. This causes blurry vision.

How does Laser Vision Correction improve vision?2018-06-11T03:11:57+00:00

Laser Vision Correction uses cool pulses of ultraviolet light to cleanly, precisely, and smoothly remove a very small amount of tissue at the front of the eye.  This corrects the problem curve of the cornea and allows light to properly focus on the retina.  The result is clearer distance vision.
The outpatient treatment process typically takes about 1.5 hours, with the ophthalmologist using the laser for typically less than 60 seconds.

Who can receive Laser Vision Correction?2018-06-11T03:13:18+00:00

Laser Vision Correction is currently available in the US to treat people who are either nearsighted or farsighted, with or without astigmatism.  Patients must be at least 18 years old.  In addition, a doctor must determine if a patient has stable vision.

Who performs Laser Vision Correction?2018-06-11T03:13:48+00:00

The lasers are computer-controlled and operated by ophthalmologists specially trained and credentialed to perform the procedure.  Because the training, skill, and experience of our ophthalmic surgeons and other personnel is critical to the best outcome of Laser Vision Correction, MidWest Eye Center’s clinical and management services cover hands-on training in Laser Vision Correction for ophthalmologists, optometrists, nurses, and technicians.

Will I be able to see right away?2018-06-11T03:14:07+00:00

You will have improved vision immediately following treatment.  In fact, many patients return to work the next day.  Your vision will continue to improve as your eyes heal and adjust to their new shape.

How long does the improved vision last? Is it permanent?2018-06-11T03:14:39+00:00

Laser Vision Correction is designed to be a permanent correction to your vision.  Doctors have been performing Laser Vision Correction since 1987.  Studies to date show excellent vision stability for many years following treatment.
