What is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is an intraocular lens that allows patients to customize their vision after cataract surgery. It allows the lens to adjust its focusing power after cataract surgery. The Light Adjustable Lens contains a light-sensitive material that allows your ophthalmologist to fine-tune and customize your vision after you’ve finished recovering from the cataract procedure.

Due to its light-sensitive abilities, your ophthalmologist can adjust the Light Adjustable Lens during a series of light treatments done with a UV light delivery device (LDD). The light treatments ensure the lens is optimized for your unique vision and allow you to test-drive different options for your vision before locking in the final version.

How Does the Light Adjustable Lens Work?

The Light Adjustable Lens is the only intraocular lens that offers the ability to alter its shape with UV light. During the cataract procedure, your cataract surgeon will first implant the Light Adjustable Lens after removing your cloudy natural lens.

The lens power will initially be close to your gauged visual needs. Once you’ve recovered from cataract surgery, your ophthalmologist will perform several follow-up treatments to help refine and adjust your vision. They will do this by using a UV delivery device. Your eye doctor will place the UV delivery device in front of your eye, where specific areas of the Light Adjustable Lens receive exposure to UV light. Exposing the Light Adjustable Lens to UV light helps change its structure while adjusting its corrective power and curvature.

Most patients require a few treatments with the Light Delivery Device before reaching their visual goals and outcomes. After finishing your treatment, you can test drive your vision and the projected clarity.

What is Recovery Like After Having the Light Adjustable Lens Implanted During Cataract Surgery?

Once you’ve recovered from having the Light Adjustable Lens implanted in your eye, you can start receiving treatments with the Light Delivery Device to adjust and improve your vision. Before locking in and finalizing your vision, you’ll also need to wear protective glasses to prevent accidental exposure to UV light. Your ophthalmologist will provide detailed instructions to prevent complications and ensure you know what to expect.

Who is a Good Candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens?

Many patients are excellent candidates for the Light Adjustable Lens, especially those looking to achieve incredible vision after cataract surgery and don’t mind painless and minimal follow-up treatments. The first step to finding out if you’re a good candidate for this revolutionary IOL is to discuss your options with your cataract surgeon. They can review the pros and cons of the IOLs we offer to help you weigh your choices and choose the best one for your vision.

When discussing potential IOLs, your ophthalmologist will ask about things like your goals for your vision after cataract surgery, your potential budget, and your lifestyle needs. Because the Light Adjustable Lens is a premium IOL, it is more expensive and requires an out-of-pocket expense compared to other options like a monofocal IOL. However, the Light Adjustable Lens is an excellent way to invest in your vision and yourself for years to come.

Are you ready to learn more about the Light Adjustable Lens? Do you think this incredible IOL may be right for you? Find out more by requesting an appointment at MidWest Eye Center in Cincinnati, OH, today!
